Who are the Mendocrats?
Tak the Knife and Doc Huxley comprise the Mendocrats. Tak has been releasing music under the name Scinx while Doc has been reclusively crafting fine sonic niceties for several moons.
Can you delight us with a small biography?
So a while back, Doc was doing his hiphop thing, and Tak was doing his rock thing. A common ground formed around music styles ranging from Galt McDermott to M.O.P, Baby Huey to DJ Premier. Tak was highly enthused by the musical nature of a slew of newfound underground hiphop productions Doc shared and Doc was highly enthused by the freedoms that came along with having live instrumentation that Tak brought to the table.
At the time, Doc was busy in a hiphop group and Tak was busy putting out Scinx records. The hiphop group unfortunately ran its course and disbanded, and soon thereafter, Doc departed for the midwest. After a couple of years-worth of calendars got stacked in the trash bin, a phone call was placed and it was decided that an official album should be put together combining both worlds. As corn arose from the ground in May, Doc & Tak, as the Mendocrats, were busy recording the album entitled "Ampersand". The album was released soon thereafter. It was mixed by Floyd 'the Barber' Peppers and mastered by Carl Saff of Saff Mastering.
So where do I hear this music? What is it like?
If you like a wide swath of indie rock, you will like the Mendocrats. If you like the Broken Bells, Gorillaz, Gnarls Barkley, or even Kanye West-style claptrap you will dig The Mendocrats. Give it a listen - which gets us to the first question. (On a sidenote, if you are a fan of Ke$ha, you are not a fan of us, and neither are the Mendocrats a fan of you.)
The music was made for artistic, educational & entertainment purposes; not to secure Bentleys on 22s. Thus, we have provided *Ampersand* for free. If you want to donate $.01 - that's more than fine with the Mendocrats. If you want to donate more than that - they'd be most appreciative as it takes a lot of hourglass sand & wallet openings to make an album such as this. But more than anything - they want you to hear the music - so help yourself!
Anything else?
First off, enjoy the music.
Second, feel free to contact The Mendocrats via the link below with your feedback - good, bad or indifferent. If you want to make a non-commercial YouTube video or some such shindig with Mendocrats material - just shoot a quick message - we'd love to see it.
Third, check out some of the great bands making great music these days. Obviously, Menahan Street Band, El Michels Affair, and Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings (and anything they touch - like the Daniel Merriweather album from a little while ago) should be counted upon for wonders of the audible kind. They make delightful music and it is thoroughly enjoyed by the Mendocrats. And there are, of course, the plethora of old forgotten bands and characters that can be found in your local Salvation Army record bins.
Tak & Doc would like to thank you for spending your time on the Mendocrats website. Your curiosity will be rewarded. Download the album and get reckless.
